Immediate Molar Implants: new surgical and restorative protocols for predictable success
Placing implants into wide sockets requires an entirely different approach and armamentarium than single- rooted tooth sockets. The literature clearly shows that this can be a successful treatment choice but there remains much confusion and misunderstanding regarding rationale for appropriate surgical and prosthetic protocols.
New research shows that molar implant placement can even affect the health of adjacent teeth and we need to reconsider our treatment options. Evidence-based treatment protocols supported be existing literature, biologic rationale, and the most recent research data will be presented. The implications of these new protocols along with molar-specific ultra-wide implants are far-reaching and will affect the way we plan and execute treatment in the molar regions
Concepts that will be examined include: extraction techniques, socket classification, immediate versus delayed placement, to graft the socket or not, how to manage “the gap”, how to utilize ultra-wide molar implants and the risks/benefits of immediate provisionalization. The immediate molar implant can be a game-changer for any practice.

Dr. Richard B. Smith

After a general practice residency at Booth Memorial Medical Center, he earned a specialty certificate in prosthodontics also from NYUCD. He later returned to NYUCD for his Fellowship in Implant Surgery. He is a former Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry at NYUCD, the former director of the Periodontal- Prosthetics program at NY Hospital Queens, and a former Associate Clinical Professor at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Smith continues to serve as a visiting lecturer at both Columbia University College of Dental Medicine for the departments of postgraduate Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry and at NYUCD in the International continuing education department. He has lectured nationally and internationally, and has had numerous articles published in the dental literature.
